What are the main Tudor design elements and how can you replicate them in your home?
You don’t have to be an expert in architecture to spot a Tudor-style home. Drawing inspiration from the Tudor period of medieval history in England, a Tudor-style home is easily recognisable by its decorative timbering, steeply pitched roof and elaborate brickwork.
Though the majority of original Tudor homes are no longer standing, recreating this period of time in modern houses has become quite popular, particularly with the invention of items such as faux tudor beams which give the desired aesthetic appearance, but with a fraction of the maintenance.
Here’s how you can replicate Tudor design elements in your home.
Tudor Beams
One of the most recognisable Tudor design elements is decorative timbering of the upper part of the house. The traditional wooden frames that were famous for creating that ‘black and white’ effect are still seen in some surviving homes today. When recreating this look in your more modern home, however, you can opt for faux tudor beams. Liquid polyurethane in real timber oak moulds, creates realistic looking beams that have all of the look and none of the maintenance of wood.
Neutral colour palettes
Typical Tudor styling will incorporate a neutral colour scheme, often contrasting the darker colours of the beams with pale painted, stucco or stone filled areas between the beams. The great thing is that when you opt for mock timber beams, you can choose colours that will both contrast with and complement your home exterior. For example, if you have a rich cream colour on your exterior you may want to choose chocolate brown or rosewood planks, whereas a stark white exterior would be best contrasted with black beams.
Large brick chimneys
Traditional Tudor homes would have large brick chimneys, usually topped off with narrow decorative chimney pots. If you want to recreate this look for your property, then you may want to consider having a new chimney built to complement the other Tudor design elements you have incorporated into your home.
Rectangular windows with multiple panes
If you really want your home to resonate with the Tudor era, opt for rectangular windows with wooden frames. Casement windows are a popular choice as is a latticed glass design using rectangular or diamond shaped patterns.
Interior Tudor features
Why stop at the exterior features of your home? If you really love the Tudor era and want to replicate the feel of these architectural traditions inside your home then consider having a stone fireplace installed. Typically these would be wide fireplaces, to accommodate large scale entertaining. Adorn your walls with tapestries to complete the effect and use geometric designs in your garden to carry the theme throughout.
